The name of Anchialos during the Early Christian period was Phthiotic Thebes. It was ruined in 7th century and since then, there are not any evidences of new community. It was inhabited again only in the beginning of our century and it was named Nea Anchialos.
Dimini has provided the most complete picture of a Neolithic settlement up to now.
Nowadays, apart from the Neolithic settlement (5th millenium B.C.), a very important large Mycenaean settlement has been discovered, which has been identified as ancient Iolkos, the city of Jason. A well-constructed wide road and many houses have been brought to light. The excavations of this settlement are still in process
Why is Sesklo important?
Sesklo is one of the most important sites for our knowledge of this period in Greece, since it demonstrates clearly the so-called 'Neolithic triptych' of sedentary habitation, agriculture and animal husbandry. The size of this first settlement (Sesklo A) is impossible to determine because of later occupation.
Beside the numerous and various exhibits, special interest in the Museum of Volos presents the way of exhibition in the halls with the Neolithic artifacts and the halls with the representation of the graves. They allow the visitor to have a more direct contact with the antiquities and comprehend their function easier.
If you like hiking (a lot) we can take a long hike (around 2 hours or more) to Goritsa Hill. On top of it exists an old church and an ancient wall. We walk through beautiful paths and we see ruins of an ancient city. It is more about hiking in nature but it combines with archaeological sightseeing.
That depends on what your preferences are. Usually, it takes around 5-6 hours to visit the main attractions. If you want to add destinations like Goritsa hill or spend more time we can always arrange it.
